Tar Paper is coal tar and paper.

Yellows strands sounds like fiberglass insulation, not asbestos.

set-up question

I'm from Scotland, but I've worked in Canada - so i'm not 100% about the building codes.. Behind the siding you should have building paper, which covers the plywood and between this and the drywall you should have Glass wool or glass insulation, which is yellow in colour(sometimes green) and has loads of glass particles within this material, hence the name. But you mention foam? Is it a polystyrene type insulation? Either way mate dont take any chances, strip it back carefully and use a respirator/mask..

Hard to say. 1979 was still a year that asbestos was in use. Get it tested is the only way to know if it is and how high the concentration content is. Im actually shocked by not only the years but at the items that I could have sworn were ok and still turn up with asbestos content. Or, the other way, when Im sure it is hot for asbestos and it turns out None Detected.
Get it tested to know for sure.

Are you insulating the walls, the roof.....?

There is another kind of insulation that I have found easy to install, and very effective.....I have used it alone, and in addition to standard fiberglass insulation....foil coated bubble wrap.

I have not heard of using felt for insulation. Spray foam insulation require special equipment to install, but can be very effective for certain applications.

There is no such thing as loft insulation. You have three types of insulation:

Celluose fibers that are typically blown into a actic

Pink fiberglass foam

Foam insulation.

All three have a place, but foam seems to get more of a insulation effect. If you look at any of the home improvement shows, they all recommend foam over fiberglass. But the problem with it is that it is expensive when compared to the other two.

What are you trying to insulate? A loft doesn't tell me much.

There really is no difference if they are both installed correctly. Spray foam insulation requires no vapour barrier, which means it's faster and easier to apply. While conventional bat insulation requires you to install a vapour barrier to eliminate draft. If by "loft insulation" you are referring to your attic space, I would simply have traditional insulation blown in.

Sure you can. It can be messy but doable. If you spray too much in an area, just allow it to set up and trim it with a knife. Don't attempt to do it while it is still soft.

I would use the "Blue" type designed for windows and doors. It does not expand excessively and will likely perform well for this application.

Hope that helps!
