I am helping my sister add insulation to her attic space, she has just purchased a 100= yr old house and wants to leave the beams exposed, sheet rock and insulate in between the beams. She purchased rigid foam board insulation at the advice of a home inspector, trying to get an idea on how to best install the insulation so that she can sheet rock over it, yet between the beams

If i were her, i would paint the underside of the roof with a heat reflective paint (brush, roller,or spray)and leave the insulation alone. You can then paint the heat shield with any color of paint once it is dry.Seems like you could have condensation/ventilation problems doing it the other way.Just do a search on the web for "heat reflecting paint" and there are solvent-free products out there for about 150.00 for a five gallon pail.At least check it out.

Two solutions: in the increasing levels of difficulty/expense
One: use a contact adhesive ( you would get at any hardware/DIY store.Cut the insulation sheets using a hack-saw blade( wear goggles and cover your face with a filter mask!). Apply adhesive on the cut sheets and apply on the area you want to.
Two: call a Polyurethane spray contractor( he will bring in his own equipment and a two componenet liquid that will make the Polyurethane foam insulation in-situ). He will mask the area where you dont want the insulation and spray a uniform coat on the desired area.
