how to fill void in wall after removing direct-vent fireplace, how to insulate, is foam insulation OK?

i removed a direct-vent fireplace from our family room and have to remove the venting and fill the hole in the wall. What type of insulation should I use behind the drywall? Is it OK to just use expanding foam insulation for the hole? I currently have fibreglass batt insulation in the wall

you don’t need to check with the city for just filling a hole in your wall.

you can use any type of insulation you like. i think it depends on the size of the hole, because if it is relatively small, then yes, you could use the expanding foam thing that comes in the can, but if the hole is larger, then you may just want to use any kind of fiberglass insulation that rolls out.

Check with your city building inspector, as you just can’t use any thing, there are building codes & requirements.

Did you seal the chimney at the top for rain, first?
